The U11 Athletic team kicked off their Cup campaign at home to Steyning Town Community Reds at the Jack Scrase Community 3G pitch at Horsham FC. With heavy rain on the way the cup tie just managed to escape the bad weather but there was a downpour of goals from this Robins side who are rapidly becoming a force to be reckoned with. The goal flood started after only 11 seconds with a goal from midfielder Noah E and then Player of the Match Cyrus S, who began on the right wing, scored 4 goals in the first half alone including a hat trick in just over 10 minutes. Goals from Centre Forward Jenson M, midfielder Wills DuV and substitute CF Ely D meant that Robins went into the break 9-0 up. The second half saw some tactical changes and experiments with the outcome of the game beyond doubt and there were opportunities for Joseph W at CF including a thundering header from a corner which narrowly missed. Ely D was lively in that position and unlucky not to add to his goal tally. The deluge of goals did not let up however with Jenson M now on the left wing launching raid after raid down the left and helping himself to a total of 5 goals in the game, level with Cyrus S who was by now playing as a marauding right back. A hat trick from strong and skilful midfielder Wills DuV, a brace from Noah E and silky strikes from both Preston I and Johnny S meant that the second half score matched the first and Robins progressed to the next round 18-0 winners. Valuable defensive and wing contributions from Cate M as well as typical solid defending from Jamie C and a very accomplished performance with excellent and calm distribution from GK Ben S meant that a goal for the visitors rarely looked likely. To their great credit Steyning’s heads never dropped and they showed great team spirit and effort throughout including some exceptional defending from their number 5.
