On Sunday 6 June 2021 Roffey Robins U10’s entered 2 teams into the Steyning Town Tournament. Our U10 team was formed as a brand new team last summer during lockdown and was largely composed of novice players who had never played competitive football before. Training for much of 2020 and early 2021 was conducted on Zoom and it was a great testament to the players’ determination that they all improved thanks to their hard work.
At the Steyning tournament one of our teams “Roffey Robins United”, comprised almost entirely of novice players put up a very strong performance in the group stage coming agonisingly close to winning one game only to be denied by a last gasp equaliser. The other team “Roffey Robins Athletic” which contained our more experienced players recovered from a nervy 1-1 draw against a solid Haywards Heath Town to win all their remaining group games (one by 7-0) to reach the semi-final against Hurstpierpoint Colts. Again we went behind due to some big match nerves but fought back tenaciously to win comfortably by 3-1 and book a place in the final against original group opponents Haywards Heath Town. The final was played on a knife edge and was still goalless at the end. Under tournament rules it went straight to extra time (5 mins each half with Golden Goal). With seconds remaining in the first period and after surviving a free kick on the edge of the box Robins began a move playing out from the goalkeeper down the left. The ball was played crossfield by the left winger and briefly intercepted but won back immediately by the midfielder who released the striker to make a penetrating run into the box. The left winger overlapped on the right to receive an inch perfect layoff and buried it in the net. Roffey Robins were crowned champions of the tournament and presented with the first silverware for our fledging team. Big congratulations to all the players who took part.
