Roffey Robins Atletico under 12’s were defeated by Ashington Cougars in a competitive encounter on Saturday.

Ashington showed their danger early on with their pacy attack springing through the Atletico defence to take the lead. Roffey responded positively to the setback with wingers Daniel Gardiner and Euan Gulliver both causing danger for the Ashington defence. Atletico’s pressure led to a corner which Aaron Woodhams swung in. The ball reached Will Anderson at the far post who managed to bundle the ball home with his groin.

Anderson could have had another soon after with a header from another Woodhams corner which hit a team mate on the line. Romario Moratalla also had a great chance before the interval – which nobody watching could work out how it stayed out.

Ashington went in at half time with a lead with the second half following a similar pattern – plenty of Atletico chances with Ashington’s pace a constant threat. Goalkeeper Theo Botevyle once again had a fantastic game, pulling off a number of quality saves with Jack Dann, Dan Klamm and Tim Clifford defending stoutly. Gulliver, Gardiner and Moratalla all had golden opportunities for further Atletico goals but it was not to be.
Atletico manager Ricardo Moratalla said “Credit to Ashington, they were a good team who caused us a lot of problems. There were a lot of positives for us to take from the game though. We continued to pass the ball well and created pressure from corners. We could have scored more, but today just wasn’t our day.”
